GROWING AND MAINTAINING A NEWLY SEEDED LAWN

THE CLICHE THAT T.L.S. LIKE TO USE IS THAT NEWLY SEEDED LAWNS NEEDS TO BE NURTURED , CARED FOR LIKE A YOUNG CHILD. THE BASIC CONCEPTS THAT USED WHEN CREATING A BEAUTIFUL LUSH LAWN IS LISTED BELOW;

CONCEPT PART #1:

A NEW LAWN IS SIMILAR TO AN INFANT IN HIS OR HER EARLY STAGES OF LIFE. THE INFANT NEED TO BE CARED FOR AND SUPPLIED ALL OF HIS OR HER NEEDS. THAT IS IDENTICAL TO WHAT A NEWLY SEEDED LAWN NEEDS. THIS ANALOGY SHOULD EXPLAIN THE PROCESS IN LAYMEN TERMS.

THE INFANT NEEDS:

1. FOOD
2. MILK
3. IMMUNIZATIONS
4. CLEANING
5. CHECK UP
6. CONSTANT MONITORING
7. NURTURING
8. GUIDANCE
9. PROTEIN FOUND IN MILK, BUT SOME NEED EXTRA SOURCES.
10. PATIENCE WITH THE INFANT DEVELOPMENT

THE NEWLY SEEDED LAWN:

1. WATER
2. FERTILIZATION (FOOD)
3. LANDSCAPER CHECK UP, (CHECK ALKALINE LEVELS, ACIDIC LEVELS)
4. CLEAN THE SEED BED TO ENSURE TRASH IS NOT PREVENTING THE NEW SEEDS FROM GROWING.
5. ONCE GRASS STARTS TO GROW, ENSURE THAT IT IS CUT HIGH ENOUGH TO PROMOTE STRONG ROOTS.
6. PROVIDE A LAWN COVER DRESS (LEAF GROW APPLICATION) TO PROMOTE GROWTH.ACT AS PROTEIN FOR LAWNS.
7. SEEDS TEND TO TAKE TIME TO COME IN FULLY; WHEREAS, IT MAY REQUIRE SEVERAL SEEDING ITERATIONS TO GET THE PLUSH LAWN ONE DESIRES. THIS TAKES PATIENCE

AS YOU CAN SEE THERE ARE SOME SIMILARITIES; HOWEVER, THE LAWN OF YOUR DESIRE CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH WORK AND PATIENCE.

-------------STEP BY STEP LAWN CARE MAINTENANCE-----------------------

STEP#1: (LAWN ASSESSMENT) ENSURE THAT WHEN NEW SEEDS ARE APPLIED, THAT THE LANDSCAPER PREPS YOUR LAWN ACCORDINGLY. THEY SHOULD PERFORM A TEST TO ASSESS YOUR LAWN CONDITION. IDENTIFYING THE SOIL ACIDIC AND ALKALINE, POTASH AND FERTILIZATION LEVEL IS CRITICAL IN ESTABLISHING  A STRONG HEALTHY LAWN FROM THE BEGINNING.

STEP #2: (SEED APPLICATION)LANDSCAPER USE SEVERAL METHODS OF PUTTING DOWN SEEDS. DEPENDING ON THE MATURITY AND CONDITION OF YOU LAWN WILL DICTATE WHICH METHOD IS BEST FOR YOU. HERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT METHODS THAT ARE OFFERED BY TOP LANDSCAPING SERVICES:

 1. (OVER SEEDING) THIS PROCESS IS THE CHEAPEST PROCESS; HOWEVER, IT IS NORMALLY SUGGESTED IF A CUSTOMER HAS AN EXISTING STRONG LAWN. THIS MAY NOT REQUIRE THE LAWN TO BE CUT SHORT, BECAUSE THE EXISTING GRASS PROTECTS THE NEW SEEDS, BUT THERE IS A 75 % CHANCE OF GROWTH.

2. (SLICE SEEDING) THIS PROCESS IS A COSTLY BECAUSE IT REQUIRES A MACHINE TO ACTUALLY CUT THE SOIL AND PLACE THE SEED INTO THE GROUND. THIS HAS A 90% GROWTH RATE IF ALL STEPS ARE FOLLOWED. THE SEED TO SOIL CONTACT IS CRITICAL INT HE EARLY STAGES WHEN TRYING TO GROW A LUSH LAWN. THIS PROCESS NORMALLY WILL ALSO REQUIRE THE LAWN TO BE CUT TO NO LESS THAT 2 INCHES. IT WILL MORE THAN LIKELY REQUIRE THE LAWN TO BE AERATED, DE-THATCHED. THE END RESULTS WILL BE GREAT!!

STEP#3 (WATERING/HYDRATION) NEW SEEDS NEED PROPER WATERING TO GROW. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO BE ABLE TO FOLLOWING THE WATERING GUIDE TO PROMOTE A HEALTHY LAWN:

 1. (EARLY INFANT SEEDS) THE SEEDS NEED TO BE WATERED THREE TIMES A DAY IF SEEDING TOOK PLACE IN THE MIDDLE TO LATE SPRING. IF SEEDING TOOK PLACE IN FALL, THE WATERING CAN BE CUT DOWN TO 2 TIMES PER DAY. WHEN WATERING YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL NOT TO DROWN THE INFANT SEEDS OR WASH THEM AWAY. T.L.S. SUGGEST IF YOU HAVE A SPRINKLER SYSTEM WATER THEM NO MORE THAT 3 MINUTES PER ZONE. IF YOU ARE YOU ARE USING A ABOVE GROUND SPRINKLER, YOU MAY WANT TO INCREASE TO 5 MINUTES PER AREA. THIS SHOULD BE DONE UNTIL THE SEEDS STARTS TO GERMINATE. ONCE YOU SEE THE SEEDS GROWING, IT SYMBOLIC TO AN INFANT BECOMING A TODDLER. THE MOST IMPORTANT THIN OTHER THAN PROPER WATERING IS TO NOT CUT THE LAWN FOR AT LEAST 3 WEEKS AFTER GERMINATION. I CALL IT THE UGLY BEFORE BEAUTY STAGE.

-------T.L.S OFFERS A LOANER WATERING SYSTEM IF REQUESTED----------

STEP#4 (LAWN POST ASSESSMENT)

ONCE THE SEEDS ARE NOW OUT AND THRIVING. ITS IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT WEEDS ARE EXPECTED TO TRY TO GROW WITH THE NEW SEEDS. DO NOT PANIC, NOR TRY TO PUT ANY WEED KILLER DOWN. IF THIS HAPPENS YOU WILL HAVE TO ALLOW THEM TO GROW; HOWEVER, IF YOU CAN PULL THE WEEDS THAT IS FINE. WHEN PULLING WEEDS FROM A NEW BED BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL, BECAUSE THEY TEND TO LATCH ONTO THE NEW SEEDS ROOTS AND ONCE PULLED CAN TAKE THE NEW GRASS WITH IT. THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO PUT DOWN ANOTHER LIGHT COVER DRESS (LEAF GROW. THE COVER DRESS SERVES TWO PURPOSES. THE FIRST IT PROVIDES THE NEEDED NUTRIENTS TO THE NEW GRASS. THE SECOND PURPOSE IS IT DISCOURAGES BIRDS TO COME AND EAT THE NEW GRASS AND SEEDS.

STEP#5 (MAINTENANCE)

YOUR LAWN IS HEALTHY AND GROWING AND YOU MAY BE VERY HAPPY; HOWEVER, THE OLD CLICHE IT TAKE A LOT OF WORK TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LAWN COMES INTO PLAY.

1. CONSTANT FEEDING YOUR LAWN: I WOULD SUGGEST THAT A LAWN BE FERTILIZED 3 TIMES A YEAR. T.L.S HAS A PACKAGE DEAL THAT INCLUDES FEEDING LAWN IN SPRING, SUMMER, EARLY FALL.

2. (PRE-EMERGENT/POST EMERGENT WEED CONTROL):

WEEDS CAN DESTROY A LAWN AND IF NOT CAUGHT AT AN EARLY STAGE THEY MAY EVEN TAKE OVER A LAWN. WEED CONTROL IS VERY IMPORTANT AND SHOULD BE FACTORED INTO MAINTAINING YOUR LAWN. THERE ARE DIFFERENT WAYS TO GO ABOUT GETTING THIS SERVICE. THERE IS THE LIQUID WEED CONTROL APPLICATION  OR THE GRANULAR APPLICATION. THE LIQUID APPLICATION WORKS IMMEDIATELY TO DESTROY THE WEEDS TO THE ROOTS; HOWEVER, IF IT RAINS YOU STAND THE CHANCE OF A RUN OFF. THE GRANULAR APPLICATION DOES NOT PRODUCE IMMEDIATE RESULTS; HOWEVER, THE TIME RELEASED COMPONENTS OFFER A LONGER METHOD OF KILLING AND ONCE WATERED IT ACTIVATES AND KILLS DOWN TO THE ROOT OF THE WEEDS.

(IMPORTANT!!! NEVER USE A PRE OR POST EMERGENT ON NEWLY SEEDED LAWN. THIS MAY EFFECT THE GROWTH.

                                     T..L.S. OFFERS THIS SERVICE

3. (GRUB CONTROL/ INSECT CONTROL)

DEPENDING ON YOUR GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION GRUB CAN BE A NUISANCE AS WELL AS FLEAS TICKS, WORM, AND OTHER INSECTS.  I SUGGEST TREATING FOR GRUBS 3 TIMES A YEAR IN THE EASTERN REGION. GRUBS WILL DESTROY A LAWN IN A MATTER OF MONTHS. WHEN YOU LOOK AT YOUR NEW LAWN AND YOU START TO SEE THAT GRASS IS JUST LOOSE AND COMING UP FOR NO REASON, OR YOU SEE BROWN PATCHES IN SPOTS AND SEEM TO SPREAD. THERE IS A HIGH PROBABILITY THAT YOU MAY HAVE GRUB INFESTATION PROBLEM. CALL YOUR LANDSCAPER IMMEDIATELY TO ASSESS THE PROBLEM. THERE ARE MYRIAD OF DISEASE THAT CAN INFECT YOUR LAWN; THEREFORE, IT IS IMPERATIVE TO HAVE A LANDSCAPER THAT NOT ONLY CUTS YOUR LAWN BUT MONITOR IT FOR ISSUES.

LASTLY, HER IS ONE LAST ANALOGY!!! WHEN YOU AS A PERSON GET HOT FROM THE SUN BEAMING DOWN ON YOUR HEAD. YOU PUT ON A CAP TO DEFLECT THE RAYS AND INCREASE YOU WATER INTAKE TO PREVENT DEHYDRATION. YOUR LAWN SHARES SOME SIMILARITIES AS FOLLOW:

                              EXCESSIVE TEMPERATURE ON GRASS

1. VERY HIGH TEMPERATURE REQUIRES GRASS WATER CONSUMPTION TO BE INCREASED, BUT NOT DROWNED. IT IS TYPICALLY NOT A GOOD PRACTICE TO WATER THE LAWN WHEN THE SUN IS AT ITS PEAK, OR WHEN THE SUN IS GOING DOWN. WHEN YOU WATER THE GRASS WHEN THE SUN IS AT IT HIGHEST PEAK, YOU RUN THE RISK OF THE WATER DROPLETS TO CAUSE HAVOC ON YOUR LAWN. THE ACIDIC AND CALCIUM LEVEL IN THE WATER TRIGGER A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON THE GRASS WITH EXTREME HEAT. wHEN YOU WATER IT WHEN THE SUN IS ABOUT TO GO DOWN, YOU RUN THE RISK OF MOLD AND MILDEW TO FORMULATE IN YOUR LAWN.  THE BEST TIME TO WATER IS AROUND 6:30 AM AND 6:00 PM.

2. GRASS THAT IS CUT LOW DOES NOT HAVE SHADE FOR THEIR ROOTS; THEREFORE, THE SUN KILLS THE GRASS. TO PREVENT THIS DO NOT CUT MORE THAN 1/3 OF THE LENGTH OF THE GRASS. GRASS AROUND 3 1/2 TO 4 INCHES THRIVE IN THE EXTREME TEMPERATURE.

3. FEED THE LAWN, HEAT DRAINS AND WITH IT TAKE THE NUTRIENTS AWAY, THE LOST NUTRIENTS MUST BE REPLACED BY EITHER FERTILIZING, APPLYING LIME, OR LEAF GROW.
